I’ve found some good movies on Netflix

I’ve found some good movies on Netflix. I end up watching a lot of foreign films.

Max Manus

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Max_Manus_(film) < this is one of the best war movies I have ever seen. I highly recommend it. Norwegian, english subtext.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WbK4WTQFf9U < here’s the trailer. I gave it 5 Stars on Netflix. It was refreshing to watch a non-Hollywood war movie. After the 70s, I think Hollywood made 2 or 3 war movies I actually liked. The reason war movies are not the hits they could be, is because they are so anti-military, anti-hero, usually. Hollywood can’t stop moralizing us about war. There is an overt cynicism and mockery of patriotism or being gung ho about fighting bad guys etc. Typical scenario: The soldier has discovered evil intentions of our government…over done trope.and thus turns against his fellows in search of the “truth”, a Matt Damon specialty. None of that typical crap is in Max Manus nor is it corny sentimental feel from the 50s type war movies. See it. I get all emotional watching the trailer now.

Aftershock:

Another refreshing foreign movie I saw last week was Aftershock: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aftershock_(film) < this is about a little girl who gets left behind when her mother has to make a choice between saving her or her twin brother after the 1976 earthquake in China. It’s perfectly named “Aftershock” for the shock the little girl feels as she hears her mother’s agonizing choice. An epic movie ensues. I loved it from the start. Very Spielbergish in the beginning, the tale of an abandoned child, but moves on from that into a sweeping huge family epic with an awesome ending. I’m always a sucker for these kinds of movies where the little kid has to survive, like in Empire of the Sun. Another 5 Stars.

Are Conservatives Fascist?

If you have a well functioning brain, ignorance is not bliss. Some ignorant people are very smart and plenty of high and low IQs are cluttered and trashed by the false-information age. So the field is kinda leveled between the brainiacs and knuckleheads.  If caught early, one can point them all in the politically correct direction.

Teach them it is high-minded to “question all” – which really means only question the Judea-Christian worldview, in turn offer answers that give a false sense of enlightenment. Make them feel like it’s a journey of discovery; puff them up with a narrow band of information designed for the desired outcome and get them looking in the ‘right’ direction. Make them feel good with high self-esteem. They will be the avant garde entertaining the idea that Christopher Columbus was evil and that the American Indian lived in the true garden of Eden, if there ever really was one, with the movies. The postmodern mind splits off in a million directions after that, becoming a nebulous purple haze, a world in which making distinctions is heresy. Like, I dunno, whatever.  The vast array of connections and contradictions would take a lifetime to explore and I doubt all the knots could be untied and cut.

Ignorant ‘liberals’, both smart and not so smart, have their binoculars out. They are high on the watchtower at the universities, mainstream media, Democratic Party and Hollywood. They are adjusting and cleaning their lenses, scanning the horizon for Swastikas on the brown uniforms of jack booted, goose-stepping soldiers. They superimpose these fascistic fantasies on ‘conservatives’, Sarah Palin, and TEA Party people, guided by Bill Maher and Jon Stewart and others. They ignore, socialism, the Green Movement, union bosses, and Michael Moore types. They deem those innocent. No one is blinder than he who will not see, as those movements are rooted in fascism. Nazi is German slang for National Socialism. The reason Nazis were labeled “Right Wing” is because Joseph Stalin, the socialist dictator of the USSR, did not like them. Our ‘liberal’ press pick it up from Uncle Joe, and ran with it. To this day people still refer to Hitler as a right winger, which then gets retro-fitted on to ‘conservatives’. Socialism, communism, “progressivism”, collectivism, are the most reliable tools of fascism. That has nothing to do with the cutting edge political system founded by the signers of the Declaration of Independence or Constitution, the spirit conservatives are trying to conserve is cutting edge.

Like a blindfolded child trying to pin the fascist tale on the republican elephant, ‘liberals’ try to pin Swastikas of fascism on us as they are covered in the completely innocent Peace Sign, a symbol of hatred for Christians in Rome under Nero. A sign that was waved along with the flag of the Viet Cong flag in DC in the 60s. They call our love of country, nationalism. You’re like the Nazis! Our belief in a good nation is called jingoism. Conservatives are not the ones who brainwash young women into thinking the murder of an unborn child is humane.

Although ‘liberals’ will admit, and sometimes take pride in, a kind of egotistic fatalism and insist that truth is subjective and always contextual, they are certain ‘conservatives’ are fascist (related to Hitler/Nazis) and stupid. If not kept under strict observance, ‘conservatives’ will get out of the barn yard, grab pitchforks and crucify gay people, disembowel minority children, kill Indians and enslave black people before midnight, with that belligerent Glenn Beck leading the charge. That’s what a lot of them think, just read their comments on yahoo.

Do you think  conservatives  are just a bunch of fascist?

Politics 101: An Awakening

I gave a speech (more of a stand up routine) in McKinney, Texas at Collin County Conservative Republicans (CCCR) back in 2009. I loved doing it. It was my first captive live audience. I did not pick an easy topic. I mixed it with my style of humor to lighten things up. My talk was based on Jonah Goldberg’s book Liberal Fascism, a great book!

I know my talk upset a woman in the front row. She interrupted me two or three times. She did not want to accept what I was presenting. It did not match her worldview. Years ago, I would not have been able to grasp it either.

Below is mini-version first part of that talk, which is a brief explanation of my awakening and breaking out of modes of thought handed to me by media, music, and art. I will break up the rest of the talk in bite size pieces in the near future. Let’s see if I offend you, too.

H. G. Wells, who has written some great books, was the first to utter the term. He did not mean it as an oxymoron or an indictment; he meant it as a rallying cry. In his speech at Oxford in 1932, he told the Young Liberals that progressives must become “liberal fascists” and “enlightened Nazis”. Yes, you read that right. Look it up.

I’m not a master but a student of history. I’m not an armchair historian, I’m more like a barstool historian. I’m a lot like you; a regular person looking at my country and wondering what is happening and on a quest for the deep reasons why.

In the late 70s my mind was occupied with girls, I watched Happy Days and thought the Fonz was cool. I went to Rocky and Star Wars and I listened to Top 40 on KIKM, Kick ‘em. I thought John Lennon’s song “Imagine” was the real anthem. The biggest world event was the hostage crisis in Iran, the beginning of the modern Jihad, but it was far away from a teenage boy. I watched the news, ABC’s World News Tonight. It was about things happening in faraway places that I could not reach riding my bike. Even if I got the car I was dying for, I couldn’t get there. It was in a galaxy far far away. Closer to home, ABC caused me to be more worried over Ronald Reagan than Jihadist, because even in 70’s the media had a ‘liberal’ bias against ‘conservatives’. The media’s summation of Reagan said, if he could find the White House, he would stumble in, launch the Nukes at Russia, like Marvin the Martian, and blow up the earth in the process. Jimmy Carter had gone good-bye and Armageddon was obviously next, and it was all Reagan’s fault.

However, Reagan’s speeches did not match the hideous bias I heard on ABC World News Tonight and 60 Minutes. I wasn’t very discerning then. I watched Reagan’s soaring State of the Union addresses and his delightful banter with the press. He would have me pumping my fist as if I was at a Van Halen concert, then Peter Jennings, or whoever, would come on, and ruin it. I did not think Jennings had an agenda in those days. He pretended to be unbiased. I could not withstand it when they dissected Reagan speeches. No one stepped to enlighten me further on what Jennings & Co would say. Eventually Reagan won my heart and mind, anyway.
